Saint-Jory’s Judo Club: Resilience and Success on the Mat
Unwavering Spirit in the Face of Adversity
In the heart of Saint-Jory, a small yet mighty judo club continues to make waves despite the challenges faced by Associate activities. With over 150 members across various age groups, the club, led by Coach Laurent Basso, returned from its summer break with a renewed sense of determination and prowess.
“The most important thing is not to win but to take part. The essential thing in life is not conquest but the battle. A man who has never struggled for a great cause has never known the meaning of victory.” –Anatole France
Stars of the Mat: Chahinez and Carla
Chahinez: Rising from the ashes
Chahinez, a rising star in the Benjamins category, had a rocky start to her last official competition, the Critérium Benjamine Occitanie. She lost her opening match but refused to let that setback deter her. With pure grit and resilience, she clawed her way back, winning her round-of-16 and quarterfinal matches before losing. But the year was still young, and Chahinez wasn’t ready to hang up her kimono just yet. After securing a spot in the repechage, she seized the opportunity, winning her fight and ultimately securing a breathtaking ippon for third place.
PRO TIP: Similar to Chahinez, never give up after a defeat. Judo, like life, is full of opportunities for redemption.
Carla: A judo journey come full circle
Carla first stepped onto the judo mat at just four years old. After taking a brief hiatus, she returned at the age of 15, reignited by her passion for the sport. She began honing her skills, securing victories and making a name for herself. Now a 17-year-old brown belt in the junior category, Carla’s determination has led her to impressive feats, including first place at the Grand Prix Belt of Colors in Auch and a third-place finish in the departmental and regional 3rd division championships.
