Jon Rahm Arranges Flight for Stranded LIV Golf Players Amid Middle East Conflict
Published: March 4, 2026
Hong Kong – In a dramatic display of sportsmanship, LIV Golf player Jon Rahm commissioned a private jet to ensure several of his colleagues could reach the LIV Golf Hong Kong tournament on time, despite significant travel disruptions caused by escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Conflict Disrupts Travel to Hong Kong
The situation unfolded as a number of LIV Golf players found themselves stranded in Dubai following a major combat operation
launched by the US and Israel against Iran. Iran subsequently launched missiles and drones at neighboring Arab nations, leading to widespread concerns and the closure of major airports.
Rahm Steps In
With the LIV Golf Hong Kong event scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 4th, eight players were at risk of missing the tournament. Lee Westwood, Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Sam Horsfield, Anirban Lahiri, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, and Caleb Surratt were among those affected by the airport closures.
Rahm took decisive action, chartering a private jet out of his own pocket
to transport the stranded golfers to Hong Kong. Seven players – Tom McKibbin, Caleb Surratt, Thomas Detry, Adrian Meronk, Anirban Lahiri, Lee Westwood, and Sam Horsfield – along with one caddy, Terry Mundy, were aboard the flight.
LIV Golf had reportedly identified eight substitute players in case the original golfers were unable to travel, but Rahm’s intervention ensured the planned team composition could be maintained.
Rahm’s Ongoing Dispute with DP World Tour
This act of assistance comes as Rahm is also engaged in a public dispute with the DP World Tour. He has accused the tour of extortion
after they offered LIV players a deal to maintain membership, requiring them to pay accumulated fines and commit to playing a minimum number of tournaments.
Several players, including David Puig, Tyrrell Hatton, Thomas Detry, Adrian Meronk, and Laurie Canter, have already accepted the agreement. Rahm, though, remains defiant, refusing to pay the fines and continuing to pursue the matter in court.
🚨🗣️😡 #EXTORTION — Jon Rahm TEE’S OFF on the DP World Tour with explosive quotes from Hong Kong, accusing the league of extorting its own players.
“I don’t know what game they’re trying to play right now, but it just seems like in a way they’re using us to — they’re using our…
Rahm maintains that he proposed a compromise – playing four tournaments on the European circuit instead of the required six – but this offer was rejected. He asserts his right to compete freely without undue pressure.
