John Isner ends singles career after US Open exit
John Isner’s Last Stand at the US Open
With tears in his eyes, 38-year-old American tennis player John Isner, ranked 157th in the world, bid farewell to his singles career. Isner, standing at 2.08m tall, lost in the second round of the US Open against Michael Mmoh in a grueling five-set match that lasted 3 hours and 57 minutes (3-6, 4-6, 7-6 [3]6-4, 7-6 [7]).
The record-breaking ace holder, with over 14,000 aces to his name, relied on his powerful first serve to dominate the first two sets. However, Isner faced more resistance as the match progressed and eventually lost in the third-set tie-break.
Continuing in Doubles with Sock
Michael Mmoh capitalized on Isner’s physical decline to level the match by winning the fourth set and ultimately defeated the “Acener” in the final set, which was also decided in a tie-break. Mmoh will now face British player Jack Draper, ranked 123rd in the world, in the third round, marking his best performance in a Grand Slam so far.
The thousands of American supporters who filled the Grandstand throughout the day applauded Isner, who played his final singles tournament there.
However, Isner still has at least one more match to play in the doubles category, alongside his friend Jack Sock (30), who will also retire after this US Open. The American duo will face Frenchman Albano Olivetti and American Robert Galloway on Thursday evening.
