Golf icon John Daly has sparked debate with his unconventional picks for a Mount Rushmore of the sport’s greatest players, notably omitting Tiger Woods. Daly’s selections, revealed in a recent interview with Hard Rock Bet, prioritize personal connection and inspiration alongside legendary achievements.

Daly’s Mount Rushmore: A Different Perspective

When asked to name his golfing Mount Rushmore – the four players he believes stand above the rest – Daly chose Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, and Fuzzy Zoeller. This lineup deviates significantly from the consensus, which almost always includes Woods.

“My favorite was always Nicklaus, Fuzzy Zoeller, Watson, Palmer,” Daly said to Hard Rock Bet. “Those were the four, that’s the best. They’ve been so great to me when I came on Tour.”

Daly’s decision isn’t based on a dismissal of Woods’ accomplishments – 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour victories – but rather a reflection of his own experiences and relationships within the game.

A Childhood Influenced by Nicklaus

Daly expressed a deep admiration for Jack Nicklaus, tracing his golfing roots back to the 1970s Golf Digest instructional series featuring the Golden Bear.

“Meeting Jack I was nervous because I learned how to play golf from Jack Nicklaus,” Daly recalled. “The 70’s Golf Lesson Tees that came out of Golf Digest—that’s how I learned how to play. He was a cartoon character in Golf Digest back then, and I think a lot of kids learned from him that way.”

The influence of Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer, and Zoeller extends beyond their on-course achievements; Daly emphasizes the support he received from these players early in his career.
