ATP Challenger: Joel Schwärzler Exits Early; Lukas Neumayer, Jurij Rodionov Still Alive

Braga, Portugal – 19-year-old sensation Joel Schwärzler’s run at the ATP Challenger tournament in Braga came to an early end as he fell to Croatian Luka Mikrut in the first round.

Schwärzler, from Vorarlberg, fought bravely but couldn’t overcome the more experienced Mikrut (ATP-242), losing 6-7 (3), 2-6. He had chances to turn the tide, especially when his opponent was serving for the first set at 5-4, but Mikrut proved too solid in the end.

Schwärzler only managed to convert two of his seven break chances against 14th-ranked Croatian Mikrut, who dominated the second set to finish the match.

Other Austrian Talents Remain in Contention

  • Jurij Rodionov, ranked 110th, is still in the hunt for crucial world ranking points at the event in Tiburon, USA. The 26-year-old faces a rematch with Abdullah Shelbayh, against whom he lost in Las Vegas recently.

  • Lukas Neumayer has made a strong start in Antofagasta, Chile. Meanwhile, Neil Oberleitner has secured a place in the main draw at the tournament in Vilena, Spain, and will face French player Arthur Gea next.
