Legendary Sports Journalist Jesús Álvarez Reflects on His Career in New Autobiography
After 47 years covering the great moments of Spanish sport, legendary TVE sports presenter Jesús Álvarez has taken an unexpected step: telling his own story. His autobiography, Close to the Stars, covers decades of unforgettable experiences with legends like Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, or Ayrton Senna, and moments that marked not only his career, but also the history of national sports.
“They have been pleasant memories, but there are also personal experiences that, when I remember them, it is not that they are unpleasant, but perhaps they are not ones that one wants to remember. And the kidnapping of my father-in-law, Emiliano Revilla, comes to mind.”
The Birth of an Idea
Álvarez, who left TVE sets three years ago, explains the impulse behind his book:
I sincerely believe that the desire to communicate, to tell and to review what my life had been weighed heavily. After collecting material for years, I finally had the time to dedicate myself to other things. I approached it with a professional approach: the publisher told me the date on which I should deliver it and so I did.
From Humble Beginnings to the Stars
From reporting from hidden vantage points to witnessing Spain’s historic World Cup victory in South Africa, Alvarez’s journey has been marked by resilience, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to journalism.
H secrète d Foley: Did you know?Alvarez was once a 12-year-old boy who lost his father and became the sole breadwinner for his family at 16. This “forced maturity” shaped his approach to life and journalism.
It was a forced maturity. I lost my father when I was 12 and my mother when I was 16. Suddenly, forced by circumstances, I changed course and opted for a career that would allow me to work from the first moment, earn a living and be able to pay for my studies. I don’t know what my life would have been like if my parents had lived, but their absence undoubtedly changed my path radically.
Stories Worth Sharing
The book brims with anecdotes like the time the Sports Editor had to resort to imaginative storytellingafter an unauthorized interview with Rafa Nadal. Another time, Alvarez accidentally confused Madrid and Catalonia’s football teams in a news broadcast, sparking a fierce backlash.
Memories of Queen Letizia and Other Legends
Álvarez’s career coincides with that of Spain’s Queen Letizia. He remembers their days working together: “We called her Leti, and it’s funny to me now when they ask me about that.” Another legend, Rafa Nadal, left a deep impression: “He has been an example to follow, a reference for me, an example to follow.“
Ageism and Retirement
Ageism cost Alvarez his job at TVE at 65. Despite the heartache, he remains resilient. “After this, I can retire,” he says, reflecting on Spain’s World Cup victory in South Africa. He also credits his wife, Margarita Revilla, for her unwavering support throughout their marriage.
A New Chapter
Close to the Stars is more than a review of Alvarez’s career, it’s an intimate journey through his life, filled with emotion, history, and a sincere testimony of resilience and passion for his profession. Now 70, Alvarez continues to work as a journalist and has taken up the presidency of the Spanish Sports Press Association.
What’s next for Jesús Álvarez?Only time will tell. But it’s clear that this legendary journalist has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
