A Dream Realized: Jones to Play for Team Korea

Detroit Tigers outfielder Jahmai Jones has been selected to represent the Korean national team in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), a moment he describes as probably one of the single most important things I’ve done in baseball, truthfully. His inclusion marks a historic high for the Korean team, boasting the largest number of overseas players ever assembled for the tournament – a total of seven.

Coach Ryu Ji-hyun highlighted Jones’ enthusiasm, noting his eagerness to contribute to the team. Jones’ mother is Korean and representing her native country has long been a personal goal.

Family Ties and a Powerful Motivation

Jones’ connection to his Korean heritage runs deep. He shared that I love my mom to death. We’ve been through a lot as a family. Being able to do this for her and for myself, to be able to represent a country, it means everything to me. His father, a former NFL player, passed away when Jones was 13, leaving his mother to raise six children alone. He credits his mother’s strength and unwavering support for his success.

Jones grew up immersed in Korean culture, enjoying traditional foods like LA galbi and making dumplings with his siblings during the holidays. He expressed a strong preference for Korean cuisine, stating, I’m not really interested in jewelry or expensive cars. I spend my money on food, especially Korean food.

Impact on the National Team

Jones’ addition brings valuable balance to the Korean national team’s batting lineup, providing right-handed power. He established himself as a key player for the Tigers last season, recording a batting average of .287 with 7 home runs and an OPS of .937 in 72 games. He is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s performance in the WBC.

Other overseas players joining the team include Riley O’Brien (St. Louis), Dane Dunning (Seattle), Shay Whitcomb (Houston), Lee Jeong-hoo (San Francisco), Kim Hye-seong (LA Dodgers), and Ko Woo-seok (Detroit).

Looking Ahead to the WBC

Jones and the Korean national team will begin their WBC journey against the Czech Republic on March 5th. His mother is planning to travel to Tokyo, Japan, to cheer him on, a moment Jones anticipates with great emotion, saying he felt like crying at the thought of seeing her after the game.

Jones has already begun friendly competition with fellow WBC participant Li Haoyou of Taiwan, exchanging playful banter and promising a fierce contest on the field.
