Toni Nadal: Alcaraz’s Rise Easier Than Rafa’s Era
Era of ‘Big Four’ vs ‘Big Two’
In the world of tennis, a new era has dawned. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have emerged as the dominant forces, picking up the baton from the legendary ‘Big Three’ – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. But how does this new era compare to the old one? Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of 14-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal, shares his insights.
Weakened Competition
“Alcaraz has an advantage that the players from a few years ago did not have: his rivals are a little weaker and less committed than those from years ago.”
– Toni Nadal
Toni points out that while Alcaraz has a formidable rival in Sinner, the level of competition below them has dropped significantly compared to the ‘Big Three’ era. “In Rafael’s time,” he recalled, “in addition to Djokovic and Federer, there were other great players like Murray, Del Potro, Ferrer, and Wawrinka.”
Rafael Nadal’s Withdrawal
With Rafael Nadal’s recent withdrawal from the sport, Toni assures us that their relationship remains unchanged. “My relationship with him is more of a friendship than an uncle-nephew relationship,” he says. “We have a normal family relationship.”
