Jamie xx, who received great love from critics and the public as a solo artist beyond The xx, is releasing a new full-length album for the first time in 9 years. [In Waves]returned to Previous work [In Colour]consists of inward-directed dance music, and the rainbow on the album cover resembles Pink Floyd’s [The Dark Side of the Moon] It reminded me of light passing through an inner prism. this time [In Waves]In , the perspective is broadened and the rectangle floating on the waves seems to metaphorize Jamie himself in the huge flow of British dance music. In this album, Jamie praises the culture he has loved from past generations to the present and provides catharsis through dance music.

In line with the release of the new album [In Waves]I would like to introduce three interesting points worth noting.

[In Waves]Three points to enjoy

1. Use of sampling: From yoga classes to clubs in “Breather”

The Avalanches used approximately 3,500 sample songs. [Since I Left You]is the album that opened Jamie xx’s world of music during his childhood. This album was an opportunity for him to explore the charms of sampling, and ‘without a computer’Music 2000′I started making music by practicing sampling techniques through a PlayStation game called . Sampling is more than just a technique to Jamie xx. His unique sampling techniques shine in this album as well, serving as a bridge between the past and present. Jamie xx uses sampling to respect the culture and musical roots he loves while reinterpreting them in a new way.

In this album, Jamie xx uses samples inspired by various genres such as 90’s British garage, house, soul, and disco, providing the audience with a musical connection across time and space. The main sampled songs in this album contain their respective historical contexts, and through this, Jamie xx shows that club music is not just a tool for dance, but a powerful means of capturing emotions and narratives.

A fun track is “Breather,” in which Jamie samples the instructor’s voice in a video of her daily yoga class during the pandemic. Although this sample has a meditative message, Jamie contrasts it with the hedonistic experience of the club. An idea that came to him while taking a yoga class was eventually transformed into a song symbolizing the emotional liberation of the club.

Another interesting sampled track is “All You Children.” In this song, children’s choir sounds were sampled to create a touching melody. This song has great meaning in that it is a collaboration with The Avalanche, whom Jamie has loved since he was young. Combining The Avalanches’ signature children’s voices and Nikki Giovanni’s poetry into one track clearly demonstrates Jamie’s artistic use of sampling.

2. [In Colour]Relationship with: Continuing conversation and new direction

[In Waves]has a similar texture to the previous work, but at the same time moves in a new direction. The track “Wanna” symbolizes this. Jamie created this song to use in a DJ set, but while arranging the tracklist, Fout tet’s advice led him to place it on the album’s opening track. [In Colour]Naturally at the end of [In Waves]A flow leading to was created. The worlds and expanding themes of the two albums flow seamlessly, delivering a deeper emotion when listening to this album along with the previous work.

3. The meaning of the club and the theme of the album: existence and catharsis

For Jamie, the club is considered more than just a space for dancing, but also a place for meditation, self-exploration, and liberation. Watching people gather at illegal raves to dance during the pandemic, he rediscovered the essence of the club culture he loved as a child. “Falling Together” expresses these feelings and, in collaboration with Ona Doherty, captures the ecstasy and deep reflection that can be felt in a club. The sound of the clock remaining at the end of the song was an accidental intervention, but it matches her voice and appropriately centers the existential and cathartic theme. Throughout the album, the club is reborn as a space not only for fun but also for mental liberation.

Jamie xx provides new musical experiences through sampling and original sound design, and hopes that listeners will liberate themselves and advance to new levels. This album once again reminds us of the charm of club culture and at the same time takes the listener on an internal journey through music. I recommend listening to his album not only to Jamie’s fans but also to those looking for a new sound.
