ITALY.- The Italian Ministry of Health has taken drastic measures to protect animal welfare by banning the controversial “yoga with puppies.” This growing trend, which involves puppies participating in yoga sessions, has been stopped after reports of alleged mistreatment, as announced by local authorities.
Piera Rosati, president of LNDC Animal Protection, expressed concern, noting that the puppies were being exploited for commercial purposes. This practice, which has gained popularity around the world, has been questioned for its lack of consideration for animal welfare.
The Ministry of Health revealed that it had received reports of organizations directly contacting dog breeders to use puppies in these yoga sessions. This use, considered by many to be inappropriate, has generated a wave of criticism from animal rights groups.
New regulations to protect animals
Giovanni Leonardi, head of the One Health department at the Italian Ministry of Health, said the use of dogs during these exercise sessions is regulated by the Italian Animal-Assisted Interventions law. This measure means that only adult dogs can now be used, thus guaranteeing the health and well-being of the animals, as well as the safety of the participants.
Giusy D’Angelo, a dog expert at Italy’s national animal protection board, warned of the potential emotional consequences of interacting with puppies during these sessions. Closeness to animals could lead to impulsive decisions, such as irresponsible pet adoption.
