Ireland’s Israeli Nations League Draw Sparks Withdrawal Calls
Buncrana Councillor: Ireland Should Pull Out of Nations League
A Sinn Féin councillor from Buncrana is calling for Ireland to withdraw from the UEFA Nations League if Israel is not expelled from the competition following the draw for League B, which has placed Ireland in the same group as Israel, Austria, and Kosovo.
“I love our national team. Just now though, the Nations League draw has been completed and we’ve been placed in the same group as Israel. If that goes ahead, then I firmly believe that we should withdraw from the competition completely. We cannot allow the sportswashing of a genocidal state on Irish soil.”
– Jack Murray, Buncrana Sinn Féin Councillor
FAI’s Previous Stance on Israel’s Participation
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) was one of several international football federations that urged UEFA to expel Israel from its international competitions in 2025 due to the ongoing Palestinian genocide. However, both UEFA and FIFA have rebuffed these calls, and Israel remains eligible to compete in both UEFA and FIFA competitions.
Murray: Make a Real Stand Against Genocide
Councillor Murray, who has supported the Irish international soccer team all his life and has traveled to watch them in numerous countries, wants the FAI to make “a real stand” on the issue of Israel’s continuing competition in international sport while the state is committing genocide.
