Tennis Stars Stranded as Airspace Closures Disrupt Indian Wells Preparations
Published: March 4, 2026
Travel Disruptions Impact Top Players
The ongoing conflict in the Gulf region has caused significant disruption to international travel, impacting several top tennis players preparing for the Indian Wells Masters tournament. Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev are among those currently stranded in Dubai following the closure of UAE airspace.
The airspace closures, a result of air strikes on Iran by the US and Israel, have halted flights and left players facing uncertainty ahead of the tournament in California.
Exhibition Match Impacted
Medvedev, the recent Dubai Championships winner, was scheduled to participate in an exhibition match at Indian Wells on Tuesday night. He was slated to team up with Mira Andreeva in the Eisenhower Cup, a ‘tie-break tens’ doubles event. Rublev was also scheduled to play, partnering with Amanda Anisimova.
Organizers have announced that American Lerner Tian will replace Rublev, and Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan will take Medvedev’s place in the exhibition.
Tournament Schedules and Player Concerns
Both Medvedev (seeded 11th) and Rublev (seeded 17th) are still scheduled to compete in the main draw of the Indian Wells Open, with their first singles matches planned for Friday. Though, their ability to arrive in time remains uncertain.
The situation has also affected an ATP Challenger tournament in the United Arab Emirates, which was abruptly canceled following a security alert. Players and staff were forced to seek safe locations.
Financial Concerns and Support for Players
The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has addressed the financial burden on players, stating that the ATP Tour is offering chartered flights at a cost of 5,000 euros per person. The PTPA has pledged to cover half of this expense and is requesting that the ATP Tour cover the remaining half.

Coaches and Other Personnel Affected
The travel disruptions extend beyond players. Coco Gauff revealed that her coach, Gavin McMillan, is also stranded in the Middle East. He’s stuck there right now. I don’t know when he’ll be able to get out. We just want him to be safe,
Gauff said.
Defending champion Jack Draper expressed concern, stating, I was in Dubai last week and probably got on one of the last flights out. The most important thing is that all the players and staff stay safe.
