Zverev Confident Ahead of Fils Match

Alexander Zverev has expressed confidence heading into his match against Arthur Fils. He’s going to lose on Thursday, Zverev stated, laughing when asked about Fils’ prospects. Zverev leads their head-to-head record 4-2, though Fils previously defeated him in the Hamburg Open final.

Fils has impressed during his comeback, reaching the final at the ATP 500 event in Doha and progressing through his opening matches in Indian Wells without dropping a set. He recently defeated ninth-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-6(9), saving five set points in a dramatic tie-break.

“I was at 0/5 in the tie-break and I was going to my box and complaining, and complaining. Ivan [Cinkus] was trying to notify me to stay focused and then Lapo [Becherini] was telling me to stop complaining,” Fils said. “Then a small voice in my head said maybe he is right and I should focus again and I tried to make him serve for it. I tried to focus as I could. Not too much emotion, celebration. Just tunnel vision and I am happy with it.”

Fils has overcome a back injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of last season, missing the grass swing and curtailing his year in August after a third-round exit in Toronto.
