Buse Upsets Berrettini, Reaches Rio Open Semifinals

Rio de Janeiro – Ignacio Buse of Peru has advanced to the semifinals of the Rio Open 2026, marking the biggest semifinal of his career. He achieved this by defeating former No. 6 ranked Matteo Berrettini of Italy 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in a quarterfinal match impacted by multiple rain delays.

A Rain-Soaked Victory

The match was repeatedly interrupted by rain, with a total of four stoppages. Buse described the conditions as fluctuating, stating, Today it was really tough because we stopped, I think, four times because of the rain. The conditions are sometimes fast, sometimes slow. You never know. But it was a difficult match, but I’m happy I managed it in a good way. Despite the disruptions, Buse persevered, ultimately securing the win in two hours and 19 minutes.

Overcoming a Former Top Player

Buse, 21, saved four of the six break points he faced during the match. At 5-2 in the third set, he was on the verge of victory when the rain caused another delay. He initially missed two match points on Berrettini’s serve before finally closing out the match.

Path to the Semifinals

This victory comes on the heels of Buse’s upset win over third seed and home favorite Joao Fonseca in the previous round, demonstrating his growing strength on the men’s circuit.

Etcheverry Also Advances

In other quarterfinal action, eighth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry earned his 100th tour-level victory, defeating Jaime Faria 7-6(4), 6-4.

Looking Ahead

Buse will now face either Thiago Agustin Tirante or Alejandro Tabilo in the semifinals, vying for a place in the final. Tirante previously eliminated Francisco Cerúndolo.

Buse’s Recent Return

The owner of two Challenger titles, Buse was absent from the Australian Open due to an Achilles heel injury. He returned to competition during the Davis Cup, playing doubles in the series against Germany.
