Horton Point: The Unlikely Badminton Champion

Source: Badminton Horse Trials

The 1994 Badminton Horse Trials produced one of eventing’s most memorable stories: the victory of Horton Point, ridden by Mark Todd. What makes this win particularly remarkable is that Todd was a late substitute, taking the reins just hours before the competition began.

A Family’s Dedication

“Horton Point” was originally purchased as a foal by the Bevan family, British equestrians with a passion for the sport. Lynne and Ros Bevan both competed in equestrian events, with Ros achieving success in vaulting and Lynne in eventing.

Ros Bevan initially saw success with Horton Point, achieving a fourth-place finish at Burghley and ninth at Badminton in 1988. However, financial difficulties forced the family to build sacrifices. Lynne took over the ride, achieving multiple top-20 finishes at Badminton in the early 1990s.

The Bevan family’s commitment to Horton Point was unwavering, even in the face of severe financial hardship.

The family even sold their own family home and, for a time, lived in a caravan. All before selling to “Horton Point”.

A Last-Minute Ride to Victory

Just a week before the 1994 Badminton Horse Trials, Lynne Bevan suffered a broken collarbone. Unable to compete, the Bevans turned to Mark Todd, who had previously assisted them with Horton Point, to ride their “family pet.”

Todd accepted the challenge, and the pair quickly made an impact. After placing second in dressage, they navigated a clear round in the cross-country phase, taking the lead after overnight leaders Marina Loheit and Sundance Kid had a fall. A flawless demonstrate jumping round secured the title for Todd and Horton Point.

At 16 years old, Horton Point became the oldest horse to ever win the Badminton Horse Trials – a record he still holds today.

Life After Badminton

Following his historic win, Horton Point was retired from eventing but continued to compete in show jumping until the age of 18, later transitioning to dressage. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 32.

“Horton Point’s” victory remains a testament to the bond between horse and rider, and the extraordinary circumstances that can lead to sporting glory.
