Hong Kong Tennis History Made: Coleman Wong’s Triumph at US Open
Southeast Asian Tennis Stars Shine in New York
The US Open, the last Grand Slam of the tennis season, has seen a significant upset from Southeast Asia. Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong, a 21-year-old right-handed player, has created history by becoming the first player from Hong Kong to win a men’s singles final at a major tournament since 1968.
Wong defeated Alexander Kobe Beach of the US in straight sets (6-4, 7-5, 7-6) on September 26 (KST) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. He attributed his victory to the support of his family and his home country, expressing his delight in bringing glory to Hong Kong.
Nadal’s Disciples Shine
Wong is not the only Southeast Asian player making headlines at the tournament. Alexandra Iala of the Philippines, another ‘Nadal Kid,’ has also made history by becoming the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam match. Iala, who was born in 2002, defeated Clara Tauson of Denmark in the first round of women’s singles, securing a thrilling 2-1 win (6-3, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6).

Both Wong and Iala are graduates of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, where they honed their skills under the tutelage of the tennis legend himself and other world-class coaches. Despite the loneliness of living on the other side of the earth, both players have found solace in each other’s company.
Alcaraz’s New Look
Meanwhile, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz made it to the second round after defeating Riley Opelka of the US. However, the real talk of the town was Alcaraz’s new hairstyle. The 19-year-old Spaniard shaved his head to the skin, drawing praise and attention from fans worldwide.

When asked about his new look, Alcaraz joked that he got the idea from a friend and decided to give it a try. The young phenom has undoubtedly turned heads with his bold style choice.
