Herne, Germany – The city of Herne is gearing up for its 38th annual Health Week, promising a comprehensive program of free events designed to foster community and promote holistic well-being. From March 16th to 22nd, 2026, residents will have access to approximately 250 different offerings, marking a significant increase of around 100 events compared to the previous year.
Focus on Togetherness
This year’s Health Week centers around the theme Healthy starts with togetherness!
emphasizing the importance of social connections and mutual support in achieving optimal health. Organizers aim to create a strong sense of community while encouraging preventative health practices.
Diverse Program for All Ages
The program boasts a wide range of activities catering to all age groups and interests. Schools and daycare centers are heavily involved, with 14 schools and six daycare centers participating – a higher number than in previous years. These institutions are organizing 45 events focused on team building and physical activity.
As co-organizer Shi Chen stated at the program presentation, the increased participation from schools is a positive sign. Malina Schäfer-König added that it was great that daycare centers and schools were taking part and starting their own health week. In the daycare centers, the main focus is on cooking together, which makes health a practical experience.
Adults can as well benefit from a variety of offerings, including opportunities for pregnant women to attend Pilates courses, workshops addressing menopause and lectures covering topics from prevention to mental health. Numerous clubs will open their doors, inviting participation in group sports.
Unique Events and Specialist Conference
Among the unique events planned is a laughter yoga session on Thursday, March 19th, at 4 p.m. In the AWO meeting place in Sportpark 5. Registration is encouraged for this event.
Prior to the main Health Week, a specialist conference titled Free as a bird – more than you see: Focus on women and girls with invisible disabilities
will be held on March 11th. This conference is geared towards professionals and will feature a panel discussion, insightful presentations, and networking opportunities.
