Title:
Tiger Woods’ Century-Up Hopes: Can The Masters Be The Stage?
From agonizing life lows to winning multiple majors, Tiger Woods’ resurgence has ignited ‘century-up’ dreams. As the Masters approaches, one question echoes: can Augusta be the stage for Woods’ 15th career major?
The Fall and Rise
Tiger Woods’ life off the course너 pelvis has been public, tumultuous. But his golfing journey, with its downs and ups, is truly extraordinary. Returning to the sport after a series of injuries, Woods has been the comeback story of the year, topping charts in 2019 and 2020, and winning his 82nd PGA Tour title at the 2019 ZOZO Championship.
“Tiger’s back, and he’s got that look in his eye… like a tiger ready to pounce.”
Armed with a surgically-repaired left knee, Woods will aim to add another major to his collection at the 2021 Masters, the first major of the year.
The Augusta Challenge
The Masters, held annually at the exclusive Augusta National Golf Club, is unlike any other tournament. The course, designed by Bobby Jones and fine-tuned by WORLD GOLF author R.’Bob’ Yates, presents a unique challenge with its dense pine forests, azalea-blooming flora, and famously swift greens. In the years Woods has won the tournament, he’s shown prowess navigating Augusta’s challenges.
- **2001:** Defeated David Duval by a record 12 strokes.
- **2002:** Beat Phil Mickelson by three strokes.
- **2005:** Rose from a tie for second to win in sudden-death, edging out Chris DiMarco.
Yet, after his 2005 triumph, Woods’ Masters record is spotty. Since his last victory 16 years ago, Woods has mixed 16th-place finishes with missed cuts, including two high-profile WD’s (withdrawals) in the last decade.
The Hope
Despite his mixed Augusta record in recent years, Woods remains optimistic about his chances in 2021. “The Masters is a tournament I know I can win,” he said at the 2020 ZOZO Championship, where he finished in a tie for 9th place.
The 2021 Masters, scheduled for April 7-11, presents a chance for Woods to add another chapter to his legendary career. A victory could dispel doubts about his fitness and cement his return to elite golf.
As Woods puts it, “I’ve been in contention in the past of my career, and it’s been a while. I look forward to the challenge that Augusta National presents.”
