Giorgio Bongiovanni, a cornerstone of Italian basketball, reached a remarkable milestone today, celebrating his 100th birthday. His career spanned decades, encompassing national team appearances and a lasting impact on the sport in Italy.
National Team Achievements
Bongiovanni represented Italy’s national team 50 times, scoring a total of 223 points. He earned a Bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in 1951 and competed in the European Championships of 1951 and 1953, as well as the Qualifying Tournament for the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games.
He played alongside some of Italy’s most celebrated players of the era, including Vittorio Tracuzzi, Cesare Rubini, Giancarlo Primo, and Sergio Stefanini, under the guidance of coach Elliott Van Zandt.
A Family Affair
Bongiovanni’s passion for basketball was shared with his family. He was married to Franca Ronchetti, a celebrated player for the Italian women’s national team, with 29 appearances and 72 points. The couple met during a joint training camp in Roseto degli Abruzzi.

He later moved to Turin, where he continued to coach, collaborating with Dido Guerrieri, Gianni Asti, and Federico Danna. He played for RIV in Turin.
He was instrumental in launching the careers of players such as Alberto Merlati, Riccardo Morandotti, Stefano Vidili, and Davide Pessina.
