Srikanth, Sharma to Lead Indian Charge at German Open Super 300
Mülheim an der Ruhr will host the German Open Super 300 badminton tournament starting Tuesday, with Indian shuttlers looking to rebound after a challenging Badminton Asia Team Championships.
Leading the Indian contingent will be veteran Kidambi Srikanth and rising star Tanvi Sharma.
Srikanth Eyes Ranking Boost
Former World number one Kidambi Srikanth is aiming for a return to the top 30, building on a promising start to the season. Despite dropping to world number 82 last season, Srikanth has shown resurgence with runner-up finishes at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 and Syed Modi International Super 300.
He will begin his campaign against a qualifier.
Tanvi Sharma Ready for Challenge
Sixteen-year-vintage Tanvi Sharma, a World Junior Championships silver medallist, will face Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching in the opening round. She has demonstrated strong performances this season, competing against top players like World number two Wang Zhi Yi and World number 12 Tomoka Miyazaki.
Tanvi as well achieved a notable victory over world number 17 Busanan Ongbamrungphan at the Asia Badminton Team Championships.
Other Indian Players in Action
Malvika Bansod, currently ranked 51st, will also compete in women’s singles, marking her sixth tournament of the year following a recovery from a knee injury. She will face Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt in the first round.
Other Indians participating include Kiran George, Aakarshit Kashyap, Isharani Baruah, Tasnim Mir, Tharun Mannepalli, and the duo of Shikha Gautam and Ashwini Bhar.
Notable Absences
Several prominent Indian shuttlers, including Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, Ayush Shetty, and PV Sindhu, will not be participating in the German Open.
