Gary Lineker Opens Up About Son’s Childhood Leukemia Battle
The sports broadcaster and former striker recalls a deeply personal and challenging time in his life, as his infant son faced a life-threatening illness.
A Nightmare Realized
Gary Lineker, the renowned sports broadcaster and former England international, has revealed the profound impact of his son George’s battle with acute myeloid leukemia as an infant. The experience, he says, was marked by fear and uncertainty, and continues to resonate with him decades later.
“What I remember from that period of my life was a recurring dream that I would be carrying a little white coffin. When I went to sleep, it was in my head.”Gary Lineker
Lineker described the recurring nightmare as a reflection of the intense anxiety he felt during George’s illness. He shared these personal reflections on the ITV series, The Assembly.
A Difficult Diagnosis
George was just eight weeks old when he received his diagnosis. Doctors informed Lineker and his then-wife, Michelle Cockayne, that babies of George’s age with myeloid leukemia generally had a 10 and 20 percent
survival rate. The couple spent approximately seven months in the hospital as George underwent treatment.
Despite the grim prognosis, George ultimately beat the cancer and was able to leave Great Ormond Street hospital three months before his first birthday. Lineker acknowledged the family’s good fortune, noting that many other parents at the hospital experienced the heartbreaking loss of their children.
“We were the lucky ones and there were parents in there that lost their kids, so we felt actually quite fortunate in the end. But it was really scary.”Gary Lineker
The Family’s Journey
Lineker and Cockayne went on to have three more sons: Harry, Tobias, and Angus. The couple divorced in 2006. Lineker later married Danielle Bux in 2009.
Lineker reflected on how he and his wife coped with the stress of George’s illness, noting their differing approaches. He found solace in talking about his feelings, although Cockayne tended to bottle things up
. They both found a way to navigate the challenging situation and achieve a good ending
