Sinaloa Hosts National Self-Defense Class for Women – Empowering Initiative Gains Momentum
Culiacán, Sinaloa – The Sinaloan Institute of Physical Culture and Sports (ISDE) is joining a national effort to empower women through self-defense training. A National Personal Defense Class, for Equality and against Violence, will be held this Sunday at 9 a.m. At the Sports High Performance Center (CARD).
Free Training Supported by Government Agencies
The free activity is a collaborative effort between the Government of Mexico, the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), the Government of the State of Sinaloa, the ISDE, and the Women’s Secretariat (SEMUJERES). The aim is to equip girls and women aged 8 and older with basic self-defense skills as a preventative measure against violence.
The State Government, led by constitutional governor Rubén Rocha Moya, is also supporting the initiative, reaffirming the institutional commitment to gender equality, the eradication of violence and the strengthening of the role of women in Sinaloa society.
Judo Fundamentals to be Taught
The class will be led by judo coach Sara Medina, and participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Interested individuals can register through this link.
Medina emphasized the importance of the event in relation to the commemoration of International Women’s Day, stating, “First of all, This proves to commemorate Women’s Day, to validate the fact that women have a voice, have a vote, and can defend themselves.”
Empowerment Through Sport
Medina highlighted that the class aims to produce women feel included, listened to and taken into account by sports and government institutions.
She added, “It is important because we can implement new techniques and commemorate this significant day, that they feel supported by the ISDE and the other agencies that participate in this event.”
The judo discipline, upon which the class is based, originated as a martial art derived from Jujitsu, created with a focus on self-defense.
“In judo we take advantage of the opponent’s strength to execute an action. The reaction-action to any type of attack is exceptionally important. You’ll see various defense and counterattack techniques, even on the ground, that allow us to neutralize a situation without causing damage, simply defending,”
