EuroBasket Women 2023 Kicks Off Today: Türkiye Faces France; Greece Hosts Switzerland
Today’s Matches
Kicking off the European Women’s Basketball Championship today are Group A games at the Piraeus Olympic Sports Center.
- At 17:30, the host Türkiye, seeded fourth at the last EuroBasket, takes on France, who finished in the last eight in 2021 but haven’t won the title since 2009.
- Following that, at 20:30, hosts Greece face Switzerland. Both teams are looking for their first win in the group stage.
Türkiye’s History and Hopes
Until the late 2010s, women’s basketball was overshadowed by volleyball in Türkiye. However, the “Moon-Stars” have made significant strides, qualifying for two Olympics (2012, 2016) and two European Championships (2014, 2018), though they’ve struggled to advance past the group stage in recent tournaments.
“We’re looking to rekindle the spirit of old and aim for better results this time,” said head coach Gaggor Akgöl.
Türkiye’s Volleyball Squad: The “Sultans of the Net”
switched focus to their volleyball team, who begin their FIVB Volleyball League campaign this week. After a successful first leg, the “Sultans of the Net” will be aiming to defend their title and secure a spot among the top eight teams to qualify for the finals.
Historical Match in Istanbul
For the first time in 14 years, an official volleyball match will be held in Istanbul when the Sultans face off against an unnamed opponent in the European League on July 16.
