FIFA Introduces Cheaper Tickets for 2026 World Cup Amid Criticism
In response to widespread criticism, FIFA has announced a measure to make the 2026 World Cup more affordable for fans. The world football governing body has introduced cheaper ticket prices for next summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Key Facts
- 10% of tickets allocated to national associations will cost $60 each, approximately €51.
- Previously, tickets were criticized as being too expensive, with some costing up to $6,900 (about €6,000) to follow a team from the first match to the final.
- The KNVB, Dutch football association, is entitled to 8% of available tickets for each Dutch national team match.
Supporters’ Reaction and FIFA’s Response
Supporters’ organization Football Supporters Europe (FSE) had initially called on FIFA to stop ticket sales due to the “excessive” prices. However, despite the expensive tickets, there was sufficient interest in the various group matches at the World Cup. Fans of the Dutch team have requested tickets until December 28 for the group matches and any Dutch matches in subsequent rounds.
“While we welcome the fact that FIFA appears to acknowledge that the original plans would cause harm, the plans do not go far enough. At best, a few hundred fans per match and team would benefit, while the vast majority would still have to pay extortionate prices, far higher than at any previous tournament. At this time, we view the announcement as nothing more than an appeasement tactic following the negative response worldwide.”
Ticket Sales and Demand
FIFA reported receiving 20 million ticket requests since the start of the sales process last Thursday. Fans can register until January 13, and tickets will be distributed later. A total of over 6 million tickets are available for the 104 World Cup matches.
Did you know?
The 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams, an increase from the traditional 32 teams. This expansion has led to concerns about ticket availability and affordability.
What’s Next?
Fans can continue to register for tickets until January 13. Keep an eye on official FIFA channels for updates on ticket distribution and any further changes to ticket pricing.
