Gavi Out for Four to Five Months: FC Barcelona’s Blow
Gavi Undergoes Knee Surgery; Out for Four to Five Months
FC Barcelona has suffered a major setback with the announcement that talented midfielder Gavi will be sidelined for four to five months due to a knee injury. The club confirmed that the 21-year-old Spanish international underwent a successful operation at the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona, with specialist doctor Joan Carlos Monllau sewing back his meniscus.
Barça had initially attempted to treat the knee injury conservatively, planning for a few weeks’ absence. However, the surgery was deemed inevitable.
Elusive Fixtures and Setbacks
This latest blow comes just over a year after Gavi tore his ACL, ruling him out for ten months. He missed Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph as a result. Now, the same knee is troublesome again.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick will have to do without Gavi for an extended period as they seek a second consecutive title. The Catalan giants trail La Liga leaders Real Madrid by five points after six matches but have a game in hand.
Flick’s Hand Further Weakened
To make matters worse for Flick, two more key players – Lamine Yamal and Fermín López – will also miss the upcoming match against Óscar Felgueiras’ side RCD Oviedo on Thursday.
- Lamine Yamal (18), last year’s runner-up for the Ballon d’Or, has been sidelined by a groin issue and is unlikely to return for the Oviedo clash. Barcelona hopes he recovers in time for the weekend.
- Fermín López (22), picked up a groin injury during the 3:0 victory against Getafe last weekend and will need three weeks to recover.
