Former world number nine Fabio Fognini is embracing life after professional tennis, finding fulfillment in new experiences even as maintaining a deep connection to the sport. During a recent visit to Tenerife, Fognini shared his thoughts on his career, his transition to retirement, and the exciting future of Italian tennis.

“I’ve been more of a spectator for some time now, but I’m happy with this new role,” said Fognini. Tenerife Challenger

Fognini spent the weekend as a guest at the Tenerife Challenger at the Abama Resort in Guía de Isora, where he participated in an exhibition match against young Canarian players and enjoyed time with his wife, Flavia Pennetta.

A Return to Familiar Territory

The Tenerife Challenger marked a return to a familiar venue for the 38-year-old Italian.

“I played here at the Abama Resort two years ago – even if it’s better not to talk about how things went back then,” he joked. Tenerife Challenger

He acknowledged the excellent facilities and the beauty of the island, noting it provides “everything an athlete needs.”

Beyond the Baseline: Dancing with the Stars

Fognini recently stepped outside the world of tennis, participating in the Italian edition of Ballando con le Stelle (Dancing with the Stars). He described the experience as challenging but enjoyable, revealing a different side of his personality to a wider audience.

“It was a very hard but at the same time very fun experience. I showed people a side of me that they probably didn’t know,” he explained with a laugh. Tenerife Challenger

He noted that his participation broadened his fanbase, attracting a younger demographic.

Reflecting on a Successful Career

Looking back on his career, Fognini expressed pride in his accomplishments.

“For me, I couldn’t have done more. I was in the top 10 and played against incredibly strong players. In my time, it was almost impossible to reach a Grand Slam final. In addition to the Big Three and the Big Four, there were many other top players at the highest level. Times have changed, perhaps the chances are a little better today – but comparisons are of no use.” Tenerife Challenger

The Next Generation of Italian Tennis

Fognini also shared his thoughts on the current generation of Italian tennis stars, specifically mentioning Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner.

About Lorenzo Musetti he said: “I am happy with his development. The decision to include José Perlas in his team was a very good one. I know him well and together with Simone Tartarini he will help Lorenzo reach his best level. He is already making progress, but he still needs that final click to establish himself permanently in the top 5 – maybe even higher. I hope he gets there soon.” Tenerife Challenger

Regarding Jannik Sinner’s recent loss to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, Fognini remained optimistic.

“Jannik lost to the strongest player in history. You shouldn’t make a drama out of it. I know him and his team – they will certainly perform very well again in Doha.” Tenerife Challenger

He also anticipates exciting matchups between Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, acknowledging their exceptional talent and potential to shape the future of the sport.

“I lost to both of them. Even when they were young, you could observe that they were something special. They are two completely different types of players who are just starting to make history. I’m excited to see who will catch up to them and who will try to put obstacles in their way.” Tenerife Challenger
