For the first time since the Venezuelan elections were held in July, Edmundo González Urrutia has publicly recognized himself as “president-elect” from Venezuela. He did so in a speech in Pontevedra, Spain, after participating in the La Toja Forum.
“I am going to return as soon as possible,” said the Venezuelan opponent, who has been widely recognized as the winner of the Venezuelan elections by more than 30 countries, including Spain. and the European Parliament. “January 10 is the date that is constitutionally scheduled for the inauguration and I hope that the popular will of eight million Venezuelans is accredited that day,” González added.
The politician assured that “I am going to go on January 10 to take office as president-elect of Venezuela” and added that nor does he rule out bringing forward his return to his country: “If President Maduro brought forward Christmas, it wouldn’t be strange if I could bring forward my return too.”
Calls for “more support than ever” from the international community
In his speech this Friday, González Urrutia requested “more than ever the support of this Spain free and plural so that, together with the international community, they contribute to the assertion of popular sovereignty in Venezuela.”
The opponent also denounced Maduro’s “communication curfew”, who closed WhatsApp and banned the social network X in the country. The Venezuelan president harshly attacked the protesters who took to the streets after the elections to express their discontent with the Chavista regime. Thousands of them ended up detained.
In an interview with ‘Euronews’ in September, former Colombian president Andrés Pastrana stated that electoral fraud has not occurred in Venezuela “but a coup d’état” and urged the International Criminal Court to protect “the civilian population” of the country. He and 30 other former Ibero-American leaders have asked the International Criminal Court to order Maduro’s arrest.
