Peace Through Sport: Judo, Karate, and Boxing Tournament Held in Beni, DRC
International Tournament Promotes Peace in North Kivu
Beni, Democratic Republic of Congo – Ugandan and Congolese athletes competed in judo, karate, and boxing on Sunday, February 22nd, as part of the International Peace Tournament. The event, held in Beni, serves as a precursor to the Beni Peace Forum scheduled for April 12th in the provisional capital of North Kivu.
Boxing Results and Athlete Perspectives
The boxing portion of the tournament featured five scheduled fights, including one women’s bout. One fight was forfeited when the opponent did not appear in the ring. The technical advisor of the Beni Urban Boxing Entente expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ performance, stating they successfully conveyed a message of peace through their sport.
“The assessment is particularly positive. Five fights were planned, but unfortunately only four took place, because the last fight which was to pit Francine against Nyota did not take place. We are taking advantage of these meetings not only to fight, but also to express our desire to see peace return to North Kivu in particular, and to the DRC in general.”

Benjamin Kyahanda Kisimba, the deputy secretary for coordination of the Congolese Judo Federation, lauded the event’s organization and the athletes’ performance.
