The center recently received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award, solidifying its position as a model for integrated sports facilities.
A Facility Designed for Everyone
Opened in July 2023, the Bandabi Sports Center was created to expand sports participation opportunities for people with disabilities and support healthy leisure activities. The center operates under the principle of priority leverage of persons with disabilities
, fostering an inclusive sports environment within the region.
The name “Bandabi” originates from the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympic Games mascot, symbolizing an Asian Asiatic bear. The name represents Banda
meaning half moon, and bi
meaning a monument commemorating the competition. The center’s design reflects this symbolism, incorporating barrier-free concepts throughout the movement routes and facilities to ensure accessibility for all.
Comprehensive Facilities and Programs
The complex features one underground floor and three above-ground floors, offering a range of amenities including an underwater exercise room, a physical training room, and a walking track. The design prioritizes rehabilitation and relaxation alongside physical activity.
Operating hours are weekdays from 9 AM to 10 PM, Saturdays from 9 AM to 6 PM, with the facility closed on Sundays and public holidays. The walking track and water exercise room are closed on Saturdays.
Specialized Water Exercise Programs
The center’s water exercise programs are a particular strength, offering customized one-to-one or two-to-one sessions tailored to individuals with disabilities. Additional programs include joint function strengthening courses, free water exercises for those with developmental disabilities, and Eoullim free water exercises. Professional instructors are always present to ensure safety.
Daily sports programs are also offered through the Dongducheon City Sports Association for the Disabled, encompassing badminton, table tennis, yoga, walking classes, line dancing, and e-sports.
