A group of investors led by Donnie Nelson, former general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, is in negotiations to acquire the sports title of Vanoli Cremona with the aim of creating a new team in Rome that participates in the Serie A basketball championship and to take part in the new NBA Europe. Luka Doncic, chosen in the 2018 draft by Nelson himself, is also part of this group of investors but will not have an executive role in the new team.
While Dirk Nowitzki‘s spokesman denied his involvement, Rimantas Kaukenas, a legend of the Italian championship with the shirts of Cantù, Siena, and Reggio Emilia, is expected to be involved.

The plan of the US consortium is to acquire the sporting title from Cremona, create a new team in Rome that participates in the Italian championship, and take part in NBA Europe when the league launches in September 2027. According to The Athletic, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has identified Rome and Milan as two of the most interesting Italian markets for the new European league, along with London and Manchester in Great Britain, Paris and Lyon in France, Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Berlin and Munich in Germany, Athens in Greece, and Istanbul in Turkey.
