Djokovic Defeats Sinner in Epic Five-Set Thriller, Reaches Australian Open Final
Djokovic Reaches Historic Five-Set Mark
Novak Djokovic’s 21st appearance at the Australian Open has written another remarkable chapter in his Grand Slam history. The 38-year-old defeated two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner in the semifinals 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 after four hours and nine minutes, thus moving into his 38th Grand Slam final.
This victory marked Djokovic’s 48th five-set match in Grand Slam tournaments, placing him among the elite in Open Era history. He is now tied with Roger Federer for the third-most five-set matches played, trailing only Stan Wawrinka (49).
Impressive Record in Marathon Matches
Djokovic’s success in these grueling, extended matches is particularly noteworthy. He boasts a record of 38 wins and only 10 losses in five-set encounters. In comparison, Federer has 31 wins and 17 defeats, seven more losses than the Serb.
The Serbian demonstrated exceptional resilience against Sinner, saving 16 of 18 break points and overcoming a two-set deficit. This result secured his eleventh Australian Open final appearance, 18 years after his first.
“I am lost for words right now, to be honest,” said Djokovic. “It feels surreal to be honest. Playing for over four hours, it is nearly 2 am.”
