Dominant Performance in Dubai

Daniil Medvedev has secured his place in the semifinals of the ATP 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a commanding victory over Jenson Brooksby. The Russian defeated Brooksby 6-2, 6-1 in a match lasting just 57 minutes.

Medvedev, currently ranked No. 11 in the world, has yet to drop a set in the tournament, having previously defeated Juncheng Shang and Stan Wawrinka.

Beyond the Glamour: The Realities of Life on Tour

While the life of a top tennis player appears glamorous, Medvedev recently shared insights into the less visible difficulties of the professional circuit.

“People see us playing in front of big crowds and top pros making huge amounts of money, so it’s natural to reckon, ‘What can I complain about?’ But there’s another reality out there that isn’t talked about much.”

Medvedev highlighted the constant adjustments required when traveling from tournament to tournament. He noted differences in balls, court surfaces, hotels, and even meals, adding up to a significant physical and mental toll over a season of approximately 40 tournaments.

“Last week I played in Doha (ATP 500), and this week I’m playing in Dubai. The distance wasn’t that long, but the balls and courts are different in the two competitions, and even the hotels and bedding in the rooms are different. There are time differences, changing countries, changing meals, and even food poisoning. You may think these are just minor changes, but imagine all of these things taking a toll on your body about 40 times a year.”

The Pressure to Maintain Ranking

Medvedev as well discussed the pressure associated with maintaining his ranking, revealing instances where he felt compelled to compete in numerous consecutive tournaments to accumulate ranking points.

“Now that I think about it, I don’t grasp if it was really necessary, but there was a time last season when I participated in 7 competitions in a row. I had no choice but to think, ‘I want to improve my ranking by accumulating 100 points in this competition and 200 points in that competition.'”

He emphasized the frustration that can arise when points are at stake, contrasting it with the relative ease of competing without ranking pressure.

“It may be simple if there are no points at stake, but if not, frustration can build up. Even if there is a lot of pressure from moving around, maintaining the will and concentration to continue winning in any situation is the most hard thing in professional tennis.”
