The Boston Celtics are preparing for a Friday, March 6th matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, with the potential return of star forward Jayson Tatum looming. The Mavericks, coming off a loss to the Orlando Magic, will also be evaluating the status of rookie Cooper Flagg after an eight-game absence.

Tatum’s Recovery and Return Timeline

Tatum is just under five months removed from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles suffered during the 2025 NBA Playoffs. He has been diligently working towards a return, training six days a week. Even as the Celtics haven’t set a firm timeline, Tatum hasn’t ruled out playing during the current 2025-26 NBA season.

I think the most important thing is making a full recovery and being 100 percent,” Tatum said in an interview on CBS Sports HQ. If that’s this season, there’s obviously conversations to be had. For me, I love to play. I’ve never been a guy that wants to sit out and I attempt to play in every game possible.”

Tatum hinted at a mid-season return during an appearance on ESPN’s First Accept, stating, I haven’t said I’m not playing this season. His quick return is potentially aided by immediate surgery following the injury and his dedicated function ethic.

Flagg, in his first NBA season, expressed excitement about the possibility of facing Tatum.

He’s one of the guys I grew up watching,” Flagg told reporters. Kind of modeled my game after. Watched him at Duke … He’s somebody I’ve always looked up to. I’m excited to face off and compete against him for sure.”

Game Day Status

As of Thursday afternoon, Tatum was listed as questionable, marking the first time this season he has received an injury designation. The Celtics have not confirmed his availability for Friday’s game. Flagg’s status is also uncertain, dependent on how he responds after returning from a foot sprain.
