Club Brugge Continues to Develop Coaching Talent, Assistants Seek Head Roles
Club Brugge has established itself as a prominent developer of both players and coaches in recent years, consistently seeing its assistant coaches move on to take head coaching positions at other clubs within the Jupiler Pro League.
A Pipeline of Head Coaches
Several coaches have recently departed Club Brugge to lead other teams, including Rik De Mil (Westerlo), Michiel Jonckheere (KV Kortrijk) and Hayk Milkon (Dender). This trend highlights Club Brugge’s success in nurturing coaching talent.
Alves Prioritizes Stability at Club Brugge
Jonathan Alves, currently an assistant coach at Club Brugge, recently revealed he turned down an opportunity to become a head coach this season.
This year I had the opportunity to become a head coach in the Jupiler Pro League,” Alves stated to ZeroZero. But I didn’t think it was the right time.
Alves, who joined Club Brugge as an assistant last summer, previously worked at Anderlecht, RWDM, and Zulte Waregem, as well as with the Belgian national U19 team.
Long-Term Commitment
Alves emphasized his commitment to Club Brugge, stating his desire for stability.
I gave my word to the people at Club that I would stay for more than a year. I wanted stability. And for the time being I am happy here.
Despite his current role, Alves maintains ambitions to become a head coach in the future.
One day I want to become a head coach. Returning to Portugal? I never say ‘no’ to that. But I have also learned throughout my career that you should not make too many plans.
De Mil’s Journey
Rik De Mil’s path exemplifies Club Brugge’s coaching development program. He progressed from coaching the U19 team to leading Club NXT, serving as an assistant under Carl Hoefkens, and even briefly taking on the role of head coach before returning to an assistant position under Ronny Deila. He then moved to Westerlo as head coach in December 2023.
Club Brugge’s continued success in developing coaching talent solidifies its position as a leading force in Belgian football.
