Camogie Association Investigates Pitch Conditions at Clare-Wexford League Match
The Camogie Association is investigating the circumstances
surrounding the staging of last weekend’s Centra Camogie League clash between Clare and Wexford, following criticism of the playing surface after the game was moved to Meelick.
Late Venue Change and Player Concerns
The Division 1B encounter was originally scheduled for Clareabbey in Clare but was switched to Meelick at late notice. Images posted online by Wexford journalist Dean Goodison revealed heavy underfoot conditions, particularly around one of the goalmouths.
According to RTÉ Sport, Clare camogie informed them that the original venue was unplayable and that a men’s match had been played at the Meelick ground prior to the Clare and Wexford game.
Wexford Chairperson Voices Safety Concerns
“That on health and safety grounds the pitch was not playable on the day.”
Martina Donnellan, Wexford Camogie Chairperson
Wexford Camogie chairperson Martina Donnellan expressed serious concerns, stating I have never seen a game head out on such a horrendous pitch. We were afraid someone was going to get injured.
She also questioned why the original venue wasn’t inspected the night before or the morning of the match.
Donnellan revealed that the pitch inspection occurred when our actual kit man was parked up at the pitch when we were told it had changed. That’s how late the call came.

The Camogie Association acknowledged the concerns and issued a statement saying they are investigating the circumstances
. The association affirmed its regulations regarding pitch conditions for intercounty games and matchday protocols for assessing playing surfaces. Player welfare was emphasized as central to every decision we build as an association.
