Clare Secure Camogie League Win Amid Venue Change and Pitch Concerns

Clare defeated Wexford 0-15 to 0-09 in a Division 1B Camogie League match on Saturday, but the game was overshadowed by a late venue change and subsequent concerns over the playing surface.

Last-Minute Venue Switch

The match was originally scheduled for Clareabbey, but was moved to Parteen-Meelick just two hours before the scheduled throw-in after the Clareabbey pitch was deemed unplayable. A spokesperson for Clare Camogie confirmed the initial venue’s condition prompted the change.

Prior to the Clare-Wexford tie, a memorial match between two local clubs took place at Parteen-Meelick, delaying the start of the Division 1B encounter by 30 minutes to 2:30 PM.

Pitch Conditions Questioned

Despite an inspection by match officials deeming the Parteen-Meelick surface playable, images circulating on social media raised questions about its condition. Wexford journalist Dean Goodison posted photos on X (formerly Twitter) showing heavy underfoot conditions, particularly in one of the goalmouths.

Player Frustration

Wexford player Laura Dempsey voiced her disapproval on social media, highlighting the difficulties faced by the team. She stated, 4 hour journey to Clare, venue changed at 12pm for a 2pm game, no dressing room before the game or hot showers afterwards… not usually one to deliver out but really not great enough.

Wexford Camogie have been contacted for further comment.
