NBA Legend Chris Paul Retires After 21 Remarkable Seasons
After 21 years of dominance on the basketball court, Chris Paul has announced his retirement from the NBA. The 40-year-old point guard made the announcement on his Instagram account on Friday, February 13, bringing an end to one of the most decorated careers in league history.
“That’s it!” After 21 years, I am retiring from basketball. It’s hard to really know how I feel, but for once, I don’t have the answer.
Chris Paul
Paul, nicknamed “Point God,” is one of only seven players to have played at least 21 seasons in the NBA. He leaves the league as the all-time leader in assists (12,552) and steals (2,728), and the first player to achieve at least 20,000 points (23,058) and 10,000 assists.
An Unmatched Career
Drafted first overall in 2005 by the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans), Paul played for eight teams during his career: New Orleans, Houston, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio, Golden State, and Toronto. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2006 and an NBA All-Star 12 times.
Although he never won an NBA championship, Paul reached the NBA Finals once, in 2021 with the Phoenix Suns. In recent years, his role diminished, and he played for four different teams in four seasons.
In his final seasons, Paul returned to the Los Angeles Clippers, his last team, playing his final game on December 1, 2025. He was traded to the Toronto Raptors during the 2026 offseason but never played for them.
“After 21 remarkable seasons, Chris Paul retires as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history and a true guardian of our sport.”
Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner
Beyond the Court
