challenge between steel icons

On the one hand, the most iconic car in cinema; on the other, the electric vehicle of the moment; on either side an unpainted brushed stainless steel car, with the former inspiring the latter.

Let’s talk about drag-race that you would never have imagined seeing: the one between the DeLoreana car from the early 1980s that became famous thanks to the Back to the Future trilogy, and the Tesla Cybertruckelectric pick-up by Elon Musk and his associates with an unmistakable design.

Taking the challenge to the street is the American workshop Hoffman Manufacturing Corpwhich retrofitted the DeLorean to make it suitable for racing with the Cybertruck. The result, which can be viewed in the attached video, is anything but predictable.

Retrofit in salsa Tesla

It is, among other things, a family competition, because the retrofit of the DeLorean was created using Tesla’s own batteries and motors. The car therefore features 55 kWh batteries and a Model 3 Performance powertrain, which give it over 200 miles (320 km) of autonomy and a sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour (0-96.5 km/h) in 4.1 seconds.

The Cybertruck, on the other hand, is the original one, with 123 kWh batteries and a 600 HP engine, for 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.9 seconds. We are obviously talking about declared values, which could be contradicted by tests on the circuit.

Unexpected victory

Given the performances reported on paper, one would think that the Tesla pick-up will win. But no: with 12.3 seconds and a top speed of 108.5 mph (174 km/h), against 12.8 seconds and 104 mph (167 km/h), the DeLorean prevails over the Cybertruck. Seeing is believing.
