A Legacy Cemented in Monument Park
The New York Yankees have announced that the jersey number of Hall of Fame pitcher CC Sabathia, No. 52, will be officially retired on September 26th. A plaque in Sabathia’s honor will be dedicated at Monument Park prior to the Yankees’ game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Sabathia will grow the 24th player or manager to receive this honor from the Yankees organization, marking a significant recognition of his contributions to the team’s storied history.
Following in Legendary Company
Sabathia’s number retirement marks the first such ceremony for a Yankee since Paul O’Neill’s No. 21 was retired on August 21, 2022. Prior to O’Neill and Sabathia, 23 numbers had been retired by the Yankees, including No. 8, which is shared by both Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey.
He joins former teammates Derek Jeter (2), Andy Pettitte (46), Jorge Posada (20), and Mariano Rivera (42) as members of the 2009 World Series-winning team to have their numbers retired by the Yankees.
