Casper Ruud on Tennis’ Evolving Landscape: Harder Hits, Different Styles
In a recent pre-tournament press conference, Norwegian tennis star Casper Ruud offered insightful reflections on the evolution of the sport over the past decade. Speaking before his entry into the Auckland tournament, Ruud explored the main changes he’s witnessed since his debut on the ATP Tour in 2016.
“There has definitely been a big change in the generation of tennis players, if you think about the last seven or eight years. I remember my first main draw on the ATP Tour in 2016, and playing against Viktor Troicki, who was part of that generation with Novak [Djokovic] and Rafa [Nadal], and guys like Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer—players I admired and watched a lot on TV. But now there’s this new generation, of which Jannik Sinner is sort of the oldest, and players like Holger Rune who are the youngest, and between those two ages, five or six years apart, they hit really hard and play a little bit different style of tennis, which I had to get used to. And they don’t just have one big shot, they usually have two—their forehand and backhand are excellent. If you look at these players, you know I lost last week to Holger Rune at the United Cup, and he has a great serve, hits hard on the backhand from both ends, and we’re seeing that more and more often. Seeing how the game changed, I realized I had to change my game a little bit.”
