Carlos Alcaraz responded to Cori Gauff’s praise by emphasizing the challenges of maintaining a positive mindset on the court. Despite the difficulties, Alcaraz strives to remain relaxed and optimistic. Gauff, currently ranked 6th in the world, expressed admiration for Alcaraz’s ability to stay positive in every situation and even smile in the face of defeat. Following his victory of 6-3 6-1 7-6 (4) against Lloyd Harrs in the third round of the US Open, Alcaraz was asked to comment on Gauff’s compliment during an interview at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I always try to do my best, even though it can be challenging to have fun sometimes. However, I make an effort to enjoy myself on the court, smile during the game, and even share jokes with my team. Winning or losing doesn’t affect my mindset,” said Carlos Alcaraz.

Gauff, who recently clinched her first WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati, admitted feeling pressure in most matches where she is considered the favorite. However, observing Alcaraz’s attitude, Gauff believes she can learn from him and potentially be more relaxed when facing opponents like Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.

“In Cincinnati, Carlos was dropping sets in every game and not performing at his best. Yet, he still had a smile on his face, especially against Hubi Hurkacz when he was down a set and a break. Seeing him maintain that positivity made me realize that if he can do it as the world number 1, under immense pressure and expected to win on paper, then I can do it too in situations where I’m not the underdog,” Gauff explained.

“Against players like Iga [Swiatek] or [Aryna] Sabalenka, where I’m considered the underdog on paper, I can also smile. The most valuable lesson I learned from Carlos is the joy he brings to his matches and how I can incorporate that into my own game,” Gauff added.

“I have a lot of joy within me, but I feel like I suppress it when I play. Now, I’m embracing the fun, laughing, and smiling, and it truly enhances my tennis experience,” Gauff concluded while discussing Alcaraz’s impact on her.
