Peruvian Upset Continues at Rio Open

Ignacio Buse (91st) of Peru has secured a spot in the semifinals of the Rio Open 2026, marking the first time he’s reached this stage in an ATP 500 tournament. The 21-year-old defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini (57th) with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in a quarterfinal match impacted by multiple rain delays.

Buse’s victory follows his upset win over home favorite João Fonseca in the previous round, demonstrating his growing presence on the men’s circuit.

Rain Delays and a Hard-Fought Victory

The match against Berrettini was punctuated by four separate rain stoppages. Despite the disruptions, Buse managed to secure the win in two hours and 19 minutes. He saved four of the six break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Buse totaled 13 winners and three break points during the match.

Climbing the Ranks

With this win, Buse has virtually climbed to 68th place in the world ranking, his best historical location so far. He previously reached the semifinals of an ATP 250 tournament in Gstaad 2025.

Buse returned to competition after being absent from the Australian Open due to an Achilles heel injury, participating in doubles for Peru in the Davis Cup against Germany.

Semifinal Matchup

Buse will face either Alejandro Tabilo (68°) of Chile or Thiago Tirante (92°) of Argentina in the semifinals. Tirante previously defeated Francisco Cerúndolo (19°) due to discomfort in his right hip.
