NBA Europe Launch Faces Uncertainty, Key Questions Remain
The planned 2027 launch of NBA Europe is currently navigating a series of unresolved questions concerning participant qualifications, tournament formats and the necessary standards for venues. These concerns were voiced by Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) managing director Stefan Holz.
Play-In Tournament Details Unclear
A potential play-in tournament following the next season is under discussion, but key details remain undefined. “Do we have a fixed place in the possible play-in tournament, or even two? And how are these assigned? Is it based solely on the ranking of the previous season? And what if a club doesn’t want to for whatever reason?” Holz questioned, highlighting the lack of clarity surrounding the structure.
Collaboration and Coordination Needed
Holz emphasized the need for a unified approach.
“In cooperation with the other European leagues, we also have to develop an overall position, formulate questions and an attitude,”
he stated. He further called on both the NBA and FIBA to provide more comprehensive information.
“The NBA and the world association Fiba “have to deliver even more,”
Holz demanded, adding
“There are currently more questions than answers.”
NBA Europe Structure
The NBA intends to initiate its European branch with ten permanent member teams, supplemented by four qualifying teams. By the end of March, more details regarding participants, the competition format, and financial aspects are expected to be revealed.
German Clubs as Potential Participants
Alba Berlin and Bayern Munich are currently considered the frontrunners for participation from Germany. The NBA is also evaluating potential locations in major European cities, including London, Paris, and Rome, acknowledging that not all cities have professional clubs meeting the necessary criteria.
EuroLeague Remains Separate
The NBA’s plans are supported by FIBA, the international basketball federation. However, there is currently no indication of collaboration with the EuroLeague, Europe’s premier privately organized basketball league, in which Bayern Munich currently competes.
