Gushue Begins Final Brier with Decisive Victory
St. John’s, NL – Six-time national champion Brad Gushue started his final Montana’s Brier with a dominant 10-2 victory over Quebec’s Jean-Michel Ménard Friday night at the Mary Brown’s Centre.
Gushue’s Emotional Return to St. John’s
The 45-year-old Gushue, competing in his last Brier before retirement, received a rousing ovation from the hometown crowd. I actually got a little teary-eyed there when it kept going,
said Gushue. To notice that and to feel it and hear it, definitely got the jitters going.
He is playing in the Brier in St. John’s for the first time since 2017.
Opening Day Results
In addition to Gushue’s win, other opening day matches saw:
- Canada’s Brad Jacobs defeat Prince Edward Island’s Tyler Smith 8-3.
- Ontario’s Jayden King beat Nova Scotia’s Kendal Thompson 11-4.
- Newfoundland and Labrador’s Nathan Young overcome Nunavut’s Derek Samagalski 8-4.
