Gypsies Edge Rovers in Five-Goal Thriller

Bohemians defeated Shamrock Rovers 3-2 at Dalymount Park, extending their lead at the top of the League of Ireland table to three points. The match saw a dramatic finish with two late goals from Rovers, prompting reflection from Bohemians manager Alan Reynolds.

Connor Parsons opened the scoring for Bohemians in the 26th minute, followed by a penalty converted by Colm Whelan in the 56th minute. Ross Tierney appeared to seal the victory with a goal in the 87th minute before a late resurgence from Shamrock Rovers.

Reynolds Reflects on Late Drama

Despite the late goals conceded, Alan Reynolds expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance for the majority of the match. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Shamrock Rovers.

“For 90 minutes, we were very good,” Reynolds told RTÉ Sport. “We did our work in the first half and they’re a good team.”

Reynolds noted a shift in Rovers’ approach, stating they opted for a more direct style of play. He also highlighted opportunities for his team to have extended their lead earlier in the second half.

“To adapt and be at our best to beat them – I thought they didn’t try and play out, they were more direct. I thought we were excellent, got to grips with them, and scored a good goal in the first half.”

“I suppose the disappointing thing is that we could have been more clinical in the second half and gone and scored a couple more, but then, you glance at the last five minutes and it was backs against the wall and you’re under pressure.”

A Blessing in Disguise?

Reynolds believes the late goals, although disappointing, could serve as a valuable lesson for his team, preventing complacency.

“We’re really disappointed about that, because with 90 minutes gone we were looking at another clean sheet. It’ll keep fellas on the ground, that’s for sure. We definitely won’t be getting carried away and we’ll get back in and get back to work tomorrow.”

Looking Ahead

Reynolds acknowledged the challenges presented by pitch conditions during the early part of the season but expressed optimism about his team’s potential as the weather improves.

“We’re very pleased with the points total. In the first game we played, the performance wasn’t great, but I feel the first quarter of games is chaos. The pitches aren’t great and it’ll settle down and get better, and we’ll get better when the pitches get better. We’re pleased, but there’s loads to do.”

Bradley’s Assessment

Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley offered a more reserved assessment of the match, acknowledging both positive and negative aspects of his team’s performance.

“Some of it was good, some of it was not so good,” Bradley stated. “Small moments went against us.”

“We pressed, but for the third goal, Adam [Brennan] is in their box about to shoot and slips on the ball. We make a defensive error and it ends up in the back of our net. They’re the small moments.”
