Top Seeds and Familiar Faces in Nouméa
The 21st edition of the BNC Tennis Open is set to kick off in Nouméa, New Caledonia, on January 4, gathering 48 professional tennis players for a packed week of singles and doubles action. This ATP Challenger 75 event boasts an impressive lineup, with Australian Jordan Thompson (No. 108) heading the seeds.
“I’m looking forward to playing in Nouméa again. It’s a great way to prepare for the Australian Open,” said Thompson, who will be challenged by fellow Australian Bernard Tomic (No. 184), seeking redemption after his early exit last year.
French fan favorite Pierre-Hugues Herbert (No. 155), a doubles specialist and former world No. 36, returns to the Ouen Toro courts, aiming to add his name to the list of winners. Herbert will face competition from compatriots like Titouan Droguet, Dan Added, Clément Tabur, Arthur Gea, and Louis Dussin.
Local Hopefuls Join the Fray
New Caledonian players Maxime Chazal (No. 582), Heremana Courte (No. 1285), and 17-year-old Jalane Salaün-Ouillemon will also take part in the tournament, adding a touch of local flavor to the event.
Timely Preparation for the Australian Open
With the Australian Open less than two weeks away, the Nouméa Challenger serves as a strategic warm-up for many players. “It’s a tournament that really matters in this niche,” said Thomas Schwertz, deputy director of the event. “The players appreciate the same climatic conditions and balls as in Melbourne – it’s a perfect prep.”
BNC Catherine Bonnet Exhibition Precedes Main Event
Before the BNC Tennis Open takes center stage, the Receiving tennis club will host the BNC Catherine Bonnet exhibition tournament from December 29 to January 2. Eight professional players and two locals will compete in short-format matches, with free entry for all.
Thousands Expected, Enhanced Infrastructure
Attracting between 8,000 and 10,000 spectators each year, the BNC Tennis Open is an international event in New Caledonia. This year’s edition promises improved facilities, including VIP access, catering areas, and a relaxation zone.
“We’re lucky not to be stuck on New Year’s Day this year,” noted Schwertz, who anticipates around 100 volunteers will help ensure the smooth running of the event.
