Toronto Blue Jays: A Wild Comeback Secures Top Spot in the Division
Blue Jays Tie with Yankees at the Top After Thrilling 11-9 Victory
The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a stunning comeback to secure an 11-9 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday, July 1st, and jointly take the lead in the division. The Blue Jays, who had been trailing 9-7, scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, turning the tables on the Yankees.
Big Hits and Bold Starts
The Blue Jays began their offensive surge in the first round, scoring seven runs. Alejandro Kirk started the scoring spree with a two-RBI single, followed by Addison Barger’s three-run homer and Davis Schneider’s two-run shot.
Barger and Schneider finished the game with four and three RBIs, respectively, contributing significantly to the Blue Jays’ victory.
Yankees Fight Back Before Late Blunder
The Yankees, however, were not to be outdone. Giancarlo Stanton’s two-run homer in the fifth inning cut the Blue Jays’ lead to five, while Aaron Judge’s two-run shot in the eighth tied the game at 9-9. Judge now has 31 home runs and 70 RBIs this season.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, their hard work was undone in the eighth inning when Devin Williams threw a wild pitch, allowing George Springer to score the go-ahead run. Springer then came up to score the insurance run on Barger’s sacrifice fly.
The Final Innings
Yimi García (1-2) earned the win for the Blue Jays, despite giving up two runs in the eighth. Jeff Hoffman secured his 20th save, while Williams (2-3) took the loss for the Yankees.
