Ulm Basketball Landmark: Cathedral Lit in Orange to Celebrate Top4 Tournament

Ulm, Germany – A remarkable display of community support and basketball fervor illuminated the city skyline in 2014 when the Ulm Minster, the world’s tallest church tower, was bathed in orange light to celebrate Ratiopharm Ulm’s participation in the Basketball Bundesliga Top4 tournament.

A Symbol of Unity: “We Are One”

The illumination was a powerful visual representation of the club’s motto, We Are One. The initiative required collaboration between the Münster community, city building management, local utility partners and religious leaders, including the then-dean and current Protestant regional bishop Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl.

Technical Achievement

To achieve the unique lighting effect, 27 spotlights used color filters, and an orange laser created a light bridge connecting the ratiopharm arena to the cathedral tower. This marked the first time the cathedral had been illuminated in club colors and has not been repeated since.
