Berlin has been celebrating since Friday the 20th anniversary of its famous “Festival of Lights”.
Thousands of people have already come to watch the Brandenburg Gate, the TV Tower, the cathedral and other iconic places in the German capital light up with color.
As Germany prepares to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this 20th edition of the festival has the theme “freedom in Europe, and everywhere in the world”.
“With our productions and our creations, we want to touch people”says Birgit Zander, the organizer of the Festival of Lights. “Light guides us, awakens our emotions, enchants our senses. Light connects and is universal”.
The event has started the day after German Unity Day, a national holiday that marks the anniversary of the country’s reunification on October 3, 1990.
Along with the festivals in Lyon, Sydney, Moscow and Eindhoven, this event, which takes place from October 4 to 13, is one of the best-known light art festivals in the world.
The Festival of Lights has become a major tourist attraction and a real economic engine for Berlin, previous editions having attracted more than a million visitors to the German capital.
