Sparta’s Elias Cobbaut Set for Exit: A Year and a Half of Frustration
From Promising signing to Flop
In September 2024, Sparta Prague expected big things from Belgian left-back Elias Cobbaut. The bearded defender arrived from Serie A’s Parma with a reputation for skill, toughness, and leadership. However, injury woes have limited his impact, and now Sparta is ready to sell.
“We won’t see him again until the end of the year,” Sparta coach Brian Priske said in December 2024, when Cobbaut last appeared on the bench.
His Sparta Career in Numbers
- 2024/25: 10 liga, 2 Mol Cup, 2 Champions League
- 2025/26: 1 liga, 0 Mol Cup, 3 Conference League
- Total: 18 games, 45 missed due to injury
Why Sparta Wants Him Gone
- Health sustainability issues: Cobbaut has played less than a quarter of possible games due to injuries.
- Lack of return on investment: Sparta signed him for free in 2024 but can’t expect to profit from selling him now.
“With a good offer, we’ll let the strong trio go,” said Sparta sports directors Tomáš Rosický andMahaj Hayakawa, referring to Jan Kuchta, Veljko Birmančević, and Albion Rrahmani. But Cobbaut is a different case.
Next Stop: Unknown
It’s uncertain where Cobbaut will go next, given his injury-prone history. However, with an interesting football biography, clubs may still be interested in his services.
